The Difference Philanthropy Makes

Donald McClain, MD, PhD, is among the most renowned diabetes researchers in the world and the perfect leader for the new Center on Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at Wake Forest Baptist. Over the course of his career, he has held positions in internal medicine and endocrinology, had work funded by the National Institutes of Health and has published more than 100 scholarly articles and book chapters on various topics—most relating to diabetes and metabolism. And thanks in part to philanthropy, we were able to recruit him to serve as the founding director.

Capital campaign chair Jim Johnston and his wife, Angela, established the Johnston Professorship in Diabetes and Obesity because they recognized the Medical Center’s need for endowed faculty positions and remembered loved ones who have dealt with diabetes.

Johnston’s commitment to helping Wake Forest Baptist transform health care, coupled with McClain’s commitment to diabetes research and treatment, will enable the Medical Center to make important advances that will benefit diabetes patients throughout our region and beyond.
